Well the chess tournament didn’t go too well for me. But it was a lot of fun. I was rushing around today trying to get everything together, grab a quick shower, and make dinner so that I could get to the tournament by 5 but of course i couldn’t fit everything in. I even burned my noodles because I put them in boiling water and then jumped in the shower and when I got out I realized I didn’t put enough water in the pot and they were steaming. I was able to save half of them, although it was so hectic I didn’t even remember to eat before I left. bummer.
I got downtown very fast and when I arrived they were already well into the first round. I had a test at 6 anyway so even if I would have won I would have had to leave and then come back. I donated money to the cause, because we are raising money to send suitcases full of toys to Russian orphanages this Christmas and need to raise the money to ship the suitcases. Then before I was about to leave, they were like O you can play shiin-loung. I was like okay. So we sat down and he had brought his timer and his own board and everything. I knew that I was in big trouble. Big Big Trouble. There was no way that I was going to beat this man.
I hadn’t played in a few years. not good. I told him this so he didn’t get his hopes up ahead of time. We sat down and got right to it. Almost immediately, he started coaching me as I played and he informed me when I was about to make a very bad move, which was almost every time. I really appreciated it and when I had to leave to take the test I thanked him for the game and headed out.
He was very nice. Some people didn’t take it so well. The head of the Chess club at our university got defeated by a boy named Silas that was only eight years old. He wasn’t too happy when he left and I kind of felt bad that he was so defeated, but secretly, I was so excited for the kid. At the tournament I met a woman today that was absolutely fascinating. Her husband is the dean of students at my university and she works with the study abroad programs. She is originally form Arizona and she moved to England and met her husband there.
They had four children before moving back to the states and when they got back, they had four more children. wow. The names of all of these children is the best part. There is Blake, Elias, Naomi, Arewyn, Silas. Marlow, Caden, and one more, which I can’t remember. I was fascinated by the enitre family. They just seemed so happy and carefree. As I was sitting and taking the picture in outside of the box I realized that I could definately see myself as a mother of many children one day. Its just so hard because I also can see myself as a single professional woman.
What does the future hold I cannot say???? I do know that I would like to go to another country for awhile like she did. Overall the tournament was very fun, and I’m really glad I participated. I don’t care how much of a nerd this makes me because I like it and I will continue being nerdy most likely forever. Heck, I’ll even take pictures and post them on the web. So ha.
